Australia: Iraqi Kurdish mother, son
sentenced over assault

Canberra, Australia, — An Iraqi Kurdish
mother and her son have been sentenced in the ACT
Supreme Court for assaulting their Dunlop neighbours
in what has been described as a 'racially fuelled'
fight.
The court heard the Kurdish family was in Kurdistan
"northern Iraq" when Saddam Hussein bombed their
town and jailed the father.
They moved to Canberra in 2005.

who cannot be named,
pleaded guilty to assaulting some of their
neighbours during an argument on the night of
December 14, 2005.
The court heard the fight was sparked by the
Cronulla riots that had taken place three days
earlier.
Justice Roger Gyles imposed no penalty on the mother
except a conviction
Her 15-year-old son has received a one year
suspended sentence and a good behaviour order.
