June
23, 2008
PARIS, — French police have arrested 24
people suspected of funneling illegal Iraqi Kurd
immigrants to northern Europe.
The Paris prosecutor's office says eight other
European countries have also made arrests linked to
the immigrant smuggling ring as part of a
multi-country investigation.
The prosecutor's office says the probe has uncovered
a "well-structured transnational cell" bringing
Iraqi Kurds from Iraqi Kurdistan region to countries
in northern Europe.
The prosecutor's office said in a statement that the
ring brought hundreds of immigrants to Europe.
The 24 people arrested Monday were picked up in
Paris, Cherbourg on the Atlantic coast and other
regions. The suspects were between 21 and 48 years
old.
