PLANO, Texas, — After moving to Plano
from Kurdistan to escape violence, a former
refugee's life ended violently when he was killed
while driving his cab last Friday.
"They already killed my brother," said Amir
Abdulkarim, the victim's brother. "We cannot bring
him back to life."
Abdullah Abdulkarim, 43, left behind a wife, four
children, three brothers, and cousins after he was
shot down in the parking lot of a Plano apartment
complex.
"It's still daylight and nobody found the person who
ever did it," Abdulkarim said of the time of night
his brother was killed, which was 8:45 p.m.
Abdullah's dream was to raise his family in a safe
environment, far removed from the horrors of his
homeland.
His Kurdish hometown was gassed by Saddam Hussein's
henchmen.
He fled the country and spent three years in a
refugee camp.
"No one expected this,www.ekurd.net
especially the family,
the brothers," said Dlawar Showani, a family friend.
"They said, 'Wait a minute, Dlawar Showani — We came
to this country to have a life. We thought this was
the most peaceful country.'"
Abdulkarim said he now he worries about the future
of his nieces and nephews.
"Somebody needs to take care of him," he said of the
youngest boy. "How is he going to live without a
father? Who's going to show him the way to live?"
Plano police are looking for leads. While the
victim's brothers say catching the killer won't
bring them peace, they said it will hopefully make
their community safer.
