Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani meets
with US Ambassador Crocker and General Helmick 28.7.2008

BAGHDAD, — Iraq's Kurdistan Region President
Massoud Barzani met with the US ambassador to Iraq
Ryan Crocker Saturday in Baghdad. President Barzani
discussed with the Ambassador a variety of subjects
including the general political situation in Iraq,www.ekurd.net
his strong objection to
the recent governorate council elections law and the
rights and demands of the people of the Kurdistan
Region.
President Barzani later received General Frank
Helmick, commander of the Multi-National Forces in
Iraq for Security Transition to discuss security
progress throughout Iraq.
While meeting with Ambassador Crocker, Barzani also
talked about the illegal method of voting on the
governorate council elections law, the position of
political parties about the law, and the role of the
Iraqi Presidency Council to veto the governorate
council law. |

Barzani expressed to the Ambassadors his concern,
and the concern of the people of the Kurdistan
Region, about the position taken by a number of
parties in the parliament. He stressed that the
recent election law adopted by the Iraqi parliament
was interpreted as unconstitutional and is being
seen as a dangerous signal to the citizens of the
Kurdistan Region.
After meeting with Crocker, President Barzani held a
meeting with General Helmick. The two discussed the
security situation,www.ekurd.net
stability in Iraq and
the general process of training and rehabilitating
of Iraqi army Special Forces. They also evaluated
the military operations that have been implemented
to consolidate security and stability in the regions
and governorates of Iraq and impose law. President
Barzani applauded the progress being made and
thanked the General for all his assistance.
President Barzani arrived in Baghdad on Saturday to
meet with central government officials about the
recently proposed election law as well as the way it
was pushed through the parliament. During his visit,
he has met with the Iraqi President and with several
US officials.
