The Parliament is asked the High Electoral Commission in Iraq to make preparation so that a referendum can be held on July 25 (along with the Presidential and Parliamentary elections) on the Constitution.

Civil society organizations, activists, intellectuals and lawyers voiced against passing the Constitution because the Parliament’s mandate had ended on June 4.Other say that the draft gives huge power to the President of the region such as dissolving the Parliament. Despite the criticisms the Parliament which is controlled by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party insisted on passing the Constitution.

The KDP and PUK participate in the July elections in a joint list, the Kurdistani List.

Nawshirwan Mustafa, head of the Change List, the strongest rival against the Kurdistani List, has spoken out against the draft. Today he told the U.S. back al-Hurra TV channel that they will resort to the Iraqi Federal Court in order to overturn the constitution which he claims it is “create small dictators,” in reference to the powers of the President.
