American Senators Joe Lieberman and John McCain letter to Kurdistan leaders  29.6.2009

June 29, 2009

ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq'

Dear President Barzani and Prime Minister Barzani,

As the citizens of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prepare to vote in parliamentary and presidential elections on July 25, we write to reaffirm America’s friendship with the Kurdish people of Iraq. The historic friendship between the United States and Iraq’s Kurds is rooted not in the temporary alignment of shared interests, but in the eternal bedrock of shared values – foremost, a commitment to free, fair, and competitive democratic elections, an independent vibrant media and civil society, and the rule of law.

American Senators Joe Lieberman (L) and John McCain
Fro more than a decade, in contrast to the rest of Iraq, which was suffering under the tyrannical rule of Saddam Hussein, the Kurds of northern Iraq established a beacon of freedom and pluralism. In 2003,www.ekurd.net our people fought alongside each other to liberate Iraq – making possible not only the destruction of Saddam’s evil and dangerous dictatorship, but the emergence of democracy, in which all Iraqis can now vote in multi-party elections and peacefully choose their leaders, as happened in many provinces across the country last January.

Likewise, we look forward to the July 25 parliamentary and presidential elections in the KRG, which we hope and expect will set a new “gold standard” in the region as free, fair and competitive, unmarred by the interference, intimidation and manipulation that has too often occurred in the Middle East. We are especially encouraged by the emergence of opposition parties and the critical coverage of the election by independent Kurdish media – a sign of the growing maturity of Kurdish democracy and a tribute to your leadership.

Indeed, it is precisely the legitimacy and credibility of the democratic process in the KRG on display in the weeks ahead – rather than any particular faction or individual – that forms the very foundation for America’s enduring relationship with the people of the Kurdistan Region.

We hope that the July 25 elections will prove to be a great success for the people of the Kurdistan Region and an important milestone in the progress of democracy in the region. We thank you for your distinguished and principaled leadership,
www.ekurd.net and hope to have the opportunity to visit Erbil in the near future.

Best Regards

Joesph L. Lieberman, United States Senator. John McCain, United States Senator.
