Fighting violence against women center to be opened in Chamchamal

Under the Ministry of Interior’s decision, a center on follow-up of the violence against women is scheduled to be opened in Chamchamal district, Sulaimaniyah province, according to Major Sarkawt Omer General-Director of the follow-up of the violence against women stated. The center will seek to expand its commitment to fighting violence against women and to attach great importance to the issue of women in the area, he added.

Kurdish player wins Arab chess championship

Baghdad: Karen Kamal Nouriddin ,the Kurdish chesser, won the Arab 2010 chess championship for women's class under 16 that was run in Libya, according to a member of the Iraqi central Chess Union. "Karen Kamal won over her competitors in the women championship after getting seven points from eight games." Mouhammed Jaber,a member in the Iraqi central Chess Union told Aknews. He explained that "Karen Kamal ,from Dahuk province is in the fifth grade and she is the daughter of a well known chess coach :Kamal Nouriddin who led many Iraqi local clubs."
Jaber added that " Karen Kamal represented the Iraqi national team in the Arab Championship for those who are under 16 years along with her colleague, Sonia Taha for under 18 years for the women category .For men category,the players Mohamed Sobhy played for under 16 years old ,Haidar Farhan played for under 18 years and Al Harith Saleh for 20 years."...Aknews com

Yazidis finished Arbaaniya winter festivals

Duhok: Zekredo , Yasidi spiritual council and advisory board member said on Wednesday that Yazidis finished their Arbaanya winter festivals. “The ceremonies of Arbaania winter festivals which is considered as one of Yasidi ancient holidays ended today “Kareem Sulaiman said. He added common people don’t fast, its limited to the clergy, Nasekeen , ascetic and those who devoted their lives to worship “. Sulaimani said that “ they have been fasting for forty days and in the days of Eid ,people who didn’t fast goes to Lalish temple (45 Km north of Mosul) to congratulates each other “. Sulaiman said “on the night of festival ,the clergies goes to the temple where they spend the last night of Arbaaniya then they return to their homes after congratulating each other on the morning of Eid “. The significant of Eid as Sulaimany says “it is likely related to seasonal changes as winter ended and changes occurred throughout the year “ he believed that this is an evidence of the authenticity and sanctity of Yasidi religion “. $911,000 to develop street in Kirkuk

February 3, 2010 -Kirkuk Governor Abdilrahman Mustafa on Wednesday initiated a project to develop a major street in the province, at a total cost of around $911 thousand. “The developed street is 750 meters long,” a local provincial media source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. He said that Kirkuk is witnessing constructional and services improvement. The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.
